Black Economic Empowerment (BEE)
Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is a strategic imperative for Isikhova and a pre-requisite for the company’s future prosperity in South Africa. The company believes that present and future challenges can be met only with a proficient and motivated staff. Each business unit follows an employment equity plan and strategy with specific targets, particularly for middle management levels and upwards.
Isikhova has embarked on a mentorship programme, and the first phase is now being implemented. An average of three mentors has been identified at each of the participating business units. After a training process they will each be responsible for one or two protégés, mostly on middle management level, and at least 50% of the protégés will be from previously disadvantaged communities. The programme is being closely monitored, and will be regularly reviewed and modified if necessary.
Isikhova has evaluated suppliers on their performance with regards to black economic empowerment in terms of the government formula, and suppliers are expected to show a marked year-on-year improvement in this regard. Although the principle of negotiating the best possible deals for the company has not been compromised, the rand value of purchases awarded to bona fide BEE companies has since the start of this exercise risen from 12% to over 65%.
